This scene draws heavily on "R-37," Lancer's origin story. The jagged lines and floating skulls in panel 3 are visual references back to that story.

I figured out the main ideas of the story after a conversation with Matt Kish. He made some suggestions, that I expanded on . . . but at this point I can't remember which parts he suggested, and which I came up with later. Was Lancer dying over and over his idea? I think it was. Anyway, thanks to Matt for his contributions! They're showing up again, four years later.

It's like the Kirby / Lee partnership? Who came up with what? Who gets the credit?

Actually it's nothing like that! We all know Kirby did the heavy lifting! I remember being Stan Lee here, just kind of running on about a few ideas. You put it all together and made something way cooler out of them.

Always a good time, when someone compares me to Jack Kirby.
